As the last surviving direct descendant of one of the twenty-five signatories of the Magna Carta, Lord Stourton was invited in 1976 to join a British parliamentary delegation that presented one of the four copies of the document, held in the British Museum, to the American Congress in Washington.
Upon inheriting his titles, Lord Stourton became a well-liked member of the House of Lords, where he served as a Tory Whip for thirteen years and as a Government spokesman on environmental issues. He was the 23rd Baron Stourton, 27th Baron Segrave, and 26th Baron Mowbray, CBE, an English peer who sat on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords.
